Not everyone knows the difference between a diapasons and a reed stop, but class 56G now do! A workshop organised by Ruth Smith, from St Mark's Church, with the Derby and District Organists’ Association meant the 30 children explored the way in which a church organ works. After listening to a short performance they quickly got busy by finding out how all the sounds were made on a working model organ, bellows and all. Children learnt how to use their feet on the pedal board and had a go at playing on the church organ console. An interest in engineering featured highly in the workshop with children building their own organ façade out of dowel rods and took a close look at the mechanisms behind the keyboard. A very inspiring and unique event!
