Becoming a Magnificent Milvertonian

At Milverton Primary School, everything we do is shaped by our belief that every child can grow into a confident, compassionate and capable learner. We call this our vision of becoming a Magnificent Milvertonian—a child who lives by our Golden Rules, demonstrates our Character Qualities, and practises our Heroic Habits.

These values run through our curriculum, our behaviour expectations, and the culture of our school. They help our pupils develop not only as learners, but as kind, responsible and thoughtful young people.

Our Golden Rules
We have two simple, powerful rules that guide every action and decision in school:

Be Kind and Try Your Best.

These rules are discussed in class, taught explicitly through assemblies and PSHE, and celebrated whenever we see children demonstrating them. They provide a shared language for making positive behaviour choices and for creating a happy, safe and respectful environment.

Our Character Qualities
A Magnificent Milvertonian shows three key character qualities. These describe the type of people we hope our children become—both in school and beyond.

Top Teammate
Top Teammates help create a positive, inclusive community. They work well with others and build strong relationships.

A Top Teammate is:
  • Considerate
  • Enthusiastic
  • Respectful

Splendid Scholar
Splendid Scholars embrace learning with courage and curiosity. They develop strong learning behaviours and a growth mindset.

A Splendid Scholar is:
  • Courageous
  • Committed
  • Curious

Reliable Role Model
Reliable Role Models show integrity, take responsibility and set a positive example for others.

A Reliable Role Model is:
  • Responsible
  • Organised
  • Trustworthy

These Character Qualities are woven through assemblies, PSHE lessons and everyday school life. They help children understand not just what to do, but who they can become.

Our Heroic Habits
Each Character Quality is brought to life through three Heroic Habits—nine specific learning and social behaviours that we teach and celebrate. These habits help children recognise, practise and refine the skills of being considerate citizens, resilient learners and positive contributors to our school community.

The Heroic Habits
  1. Considerate Children learn to understand their own emotions, recognise the feelings of others, collaborate positively and show empathy.
  2. Enthusiastic Enthusiastic learners bring energy and motivation to their work. They inspire others, enjoy challenges and take pride in their efforts.
  3. Respectful Respectful learners listen well, communicate thoughtfully and value the similarities and differences among their peers.
  4. Courageous Courageous learners embrace challenges, step out of their comfort zone, and show resilience when things get tough.
  5. Committed Committed learners persevere, use feedback to improve, stay focused, and strive for excellence in everything they do.
  6. Curious Curious learners ask questions, investigate ideas, think creatively and seek deeper understanding.
  7. Responsible Responsible learners take ownership of their choices, manage their time well, and contribute positively to the school community.
  8. Organised Organised learners come prepared for learning, look after their belongings, follow routines and help create a calm classroom environment.
  9. Trustworthy Trustworthy learners act with honesty and integrity, keep their promises, and can be relied upon by friends and adults alike.

How We Teach and Celebrate Our Values
At Milverton, these values are not posters on a wall—they are practised daily. We teach them through:
  • Whole‑school assemblies
  • PSHE lessons
  • Classroom activities and role‑play
  • Celebrations such as Magnificent Milvertonian of the Week
  • Praise, certificates and displays that highlight excellent behaviour and learning
We believe that when children understand and embody these values, they grow not only as successful learners, but as kind, confident and responsible people prepared to make a positive difference in the world.

The most important thing we know is that learning is a journey… and all of these skills help us on our way!
