Welcome to Milverton Primary School
Starting at a new school can be a daunting experience for both children and parents. We hope to include some key, bite-size pieces of information that make help your transition into school a smooth one!
Where do we drop off and collect the children?
The gates to come onto the playground are on Rugby Road and Greatheed Road.
We ask parents to arrive on the playground at 8.45 ready to come into school at 8.55. At the end of the day, parents arrive onto the playground at 3.10 ready to collect at 3.25.
What do the children wear to school?
We don't have a uniform but we do ask that parents send their children in sensible outfits for the weather conditions and sensible footwear they will be comfortable in at break and lunch. We also ask that parents send a coat with their child on cold or rainy days.

We ask that for PE children wear plain black shorts and plain white t-shirts.
What do the children have for lunch?
Children choose daily one of four meals for lunch:

Red = Meat option
Green = Vegetarian option
Blue = Sandwich option
Yellow = Baked potato option

Menus are available below. Meals are paid for via Parent Pay; the school office will arrange a payment account for this.

Alternatively, children may bring a packed lunch to school.

What time is the school day?
Doors open 8.55am
Collection at 3.25pm

How does the school communicate with parents?
What are the FOMPS?
We strongly believe the best form of communication is through a face to face discussion or conversation over the phone. Appointments can be arranged with teachers or the Head Teacher through the school office.

We have a school app that has daily updates on a newsfeed section, direct messaging to parents and a calendar, sharing lots of information for families.

The teachers / teaching assistants are available for messages on the door each morning or at the end of the school day. Alternatively, you may wish to send a note in with your child.

Parents can email the school office, which will be forwarded to the class teacher. Teachers will aim to respond within a few days, via email or a phone call.
The Friends of Milverton Primary School (FOMPS) is the school's parents and teacher association.

It is a registered charity and organises fundraising events for the school and fun events for the school community to engage in.
Where is the best place to get dates for upcoming events?
The school app has a calendar section with all the upcoming events in that term. The weekly 'Headlines' message has a list of events for the upcoming term.
EYFS New Starters
Starting school can be a nervous time for parents who are going through this process for the first time. We aim to help our parents through this time with some useful pointers and clear information to help you begin your child's journey here at Milverton.

Frequently Asked Questions

Home Learning
Home learning is sent out in termly booklets - we believe the focus should be on children reading every day for pleasure, practising spellings and practising key maths facts. There are pages for each of these elements in the booklets, as well as some additional optional homework activities linked to the children's topics.

The booklets should be brought in each week (on the day indicated on the front cover), so the children can complete their spelling test and to allow the teachers the check them.

Each week we have a competition to see which class reads the most minutes at home and a trophy is awarded during celebration assembly. Please can you make sure you sign your children’s reading minutes, so they are counted. Evidence would suggest the best indicator of success in school is reading every day for enjoyment – we appreciate your (continued) support with this.

We use an online mathematics system called Mathletics, which has lots of games and activities that link to the topic the children are covering that week and additional practice games that enable children to collect points and build a character over time. Children should log in once a week to complete activities and games set - then, if they choose to, they can move onto the point building practice games.

We subscribe to the 'Bug Club' online reading platform. This has lots of titles for children choose from to read online. This is in addition to the hard copy reading books set by classes in EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2. For Years 3,4,5 and 6, this is a place where you can find lots of additional titles to read for pleasure - it isn't compulsory - just an additional resource if you can't make it to the library or if you prefer to read online.

School Dinners
Children are given a choice of 4 meals per day, which they select from during the morning register. There are four colours Red (mostly meat options), Green (mostly veggie options), Yellow (baked potato) and Blue (a cold sandwich option). Reviewing the menus and having a discussion with your child about which choice they make is advised. Meals cost £2.30 and are paid for on your ParentPay account - if you are having difficulty setting up an account, please contact the office on [email protected]

PE Kits

Classes have PE twice a week. Children should have a PE kit in school, which will be used for indoor PE. In most cases, it is sensible to keep this in school, taking it home to be washed at the end of each half term. The PE kit should consist of: plimsole shoes, a plain white t-shirt and black shorts. Please check shoe sizes each half term when the kit comes home - children are notoriously bad at letting parents know when their shoes do not fit anymore!

On the days listed below, we ask that children wear ‘active clothes’ to school that are weather appropriate: shorts and a T shirt in warmer weather; joggers and a warm top in colder weather. They should be wearing trainers on this day please.

Year 1 and 2 (Apple, Cherry, Pear) Tuesday Outdoor PE
Year 3 and 4 (Maple, Pine, Elm) Wednesday Outdoor PE
Year 5 and 6 (Oak, Chestnut, Ash) Thursday Outdoor PE

They will be doing outdoor PE even in light rain, so please make sure they have a coat in school.

Phones in school
We strongly suggest that children do not own a personal phone at primary age - for many, many reasons. However, we also understand that in certain situations, when children are a little older, having available and immediate communication to their parents is essential, particularly if they walk home alone. If children need to bring a phone into school, we ask that it is switched off during the day and handed into the school office. Phones can then be collected at the end of the school day or when the children have finished their WAM club.
If your child needs to bring a phone to school, please complete a phone consent form (found on the APP in the forms section). We will also be sending this out to all parents in Year 5 and 6 to complete.

We also ask that children do not wear smart watches that are able to take pictures, make phone calls or connect to the internet.

Communication
We are looking at our communication structure this year and will be seeking parental opinion on certain aspects of this.
  • Dates are sent out weekly in the headlines and will appear on the app calendar.
  • Currently, you receive messages via the app - these are always sent as an email as well and are used to share targeted information for specific year groups or classes, including letters and information messages.
  • Friday News Headlines will be sent out as a message and an email on a Friday and will include news items, important information and reminders. We try to use this as a ‘catch all’ to try to reduce the number of single information messages you receive.
  • Good news is updated by staff daily on the newsfeed section of the app. You may want to get into the habit of having a look through once or twice a week, to celebrate things going on in our school community.
  • Staff are on the door in the mornings and at the end of the day should you wish to convey a face-to-face message - obviously it is very difficult to hold a full conversation at this time, as the teachers start to teach the children as soon as they enter. A better way to communicate is to hand over a written note, set up an appointment for a phone call or meeting or send an email to the school office.
  • You can phone the school office to leave messages for staff or ask questions; Debbie Hone is our lovely receptionist and is very helpful.
  • All Email communication should be sent through to the office email and will then be passed to teachers. Teachers will often respond with a phone call rather than an email, to avoid messages being misunderstood or misinterpreted. This will not be an immediate response and will probably be within a few days via a phone call at a lunchtime or after school.
  • I try to be out on the playground every morning to answer questions and help as best I can, but for a longer discussion I would suggest setting up a meeting time. I will, in most cases, suggest a conversation with the class teacher as a first port of call, as they are often better placed to deal with most situations.

Celebration Assemblies
Often children would like to bring in special achievements completed outside of school. On a Friday we celebrate these trophies, medals and certificates in the whole school assembly. Children will bring their achievement to leave in my office and I will bring to the hall to present in front of everyone. Try to bring these in on a Thursday please, otherwise they sit in my office for the entire week!
